I was completely stressed and felt very vulnerable as a single parent trying to deal with everything on my own, Sedgwick and Direct Group. The loss adjusters appointed by the insurance company couldn't have cared less and gave conflicting information. They would not reply to me and refused to repair or replace lots of damaged parts of the house and contents.
I literally felt I was fighting for every penny but getting nowhere. It was degrading and traumatic in the aftermath of the fire. Michael Williamson from Public Loss Adjusters attended a couple of meetings with the insurance company and was absolutely excellent at fighting my corner to make sure I got the right settlement to repair my house and replace contents.
For example: After months of struggling on my own and getting quotes etc, I was made an offer by the insurance company to repair my house but it was nowhere near enough.
But with help from PLA who reassessed the claim themselves and negotiated with the insurance company, I received nearly 3 times the original offer which was what was actually needed.
Michael was appointed to deal with my claim and overall I am certain I would never have got things settled fairly on my own. It was a relief to have someone experienced and knowledgeable on my side.
In addition to the meetings, Michael made lots of calls, sent lots of emails and submitted several complaints when necessary to try to resolve things.
He did put a lot of work into it and I feel the commission was well earned (PLA charge 10%). In my case it was much better to pay commission on a fair settlement than to accept the woeful offer from the insurance company.
It took 16 months all in all so not a quick process. If you are unfortunate enough to have a fire, be prepared that it will take a lot longer than you may think to settle. Insurers seem to try to delay as much as possible to wear you down so you will accept a pay-out which is less than you need out of desperation.
I would like to think not every person has such a bad experience making a claim but unfortunately it does seem to be quite common.
I cannot thank Andy enough for handling our recent insurance claim after a burst kitchen pipe flooded our kitchen He took control and dealt with every aspect of our claim with our insurers. He was present at the house when the insurers sent there inspectors out to view the damage.
